Cosmetic Dentistry

At KIN Dental we are passionate about cosmetic dentistry and having transformed thousands of smiles over a combined 50+ years of experience, we’re well aware what a new smile can do for your confidence, happiness and general well-being.

Our philosophy of dentistry in general is to be as respectful and conservative to your biology and this absolutely extends to the way to approach cosmetics.

Let’s look at a few case studies below which demonstrate this approach that we call ‘BioAesthetic Dentistry’

Case Study 1

Scenario:

This lovely patient came into the studio for a second opinion as she was told her only option was orthodontics. After a detailed discussion about her situation, it became apparent that by improving the overall colour as well as the look of her upper front 6 teeth we would be able to achieve a smile that she would be more confident in.

Treatment performed:

Whitening + 6 resin veneers

Highlight for her:

She is over the moon with the result and can’t stop smiling! She was surprised that the entire process didn’t require any anaesthetic nor did she feel any discomfort.

Highlight for us:

This case is a perfect example of Bio-Aesthetic Dentistry. By digitally planning the final restorations we were able to design the build-ups such that we didn’t need to drill away any of her health natural tooth structure.

Case Study 2

Scenario:

This patient had several areas in her smile that she was not happy with. The general asymmetry, the gap and also a few chipped areas meant that she wasn’t smiling in photos much at all. She was had some upcoming travel commitments which meant that we needed to complete the work in a time and cost efficient manner.

Treatment performed:

Whitening + 4 resin veneers (phase 1) + 2-4 resin veneers (phase 2) in the future.

Highlight for her:

She loves her smile now and was surprised how quickly this type of transformation can be done with plenty of runway for her upcoming travel.

Highlight for us:

Her natural teeth had a high level of translucency which was technically challenging to match especially with resin. We used multiple shades of resin and tints to maintain this translucency whilst restoring the symmetry and balance back to her smile.

Case Study 3

Scenario:

BioAesthetic Dentistry isn’t just for front teeth. Through early detection with the latest technologies and strict clinical protocols, we’re able to restored decayed/compromised teeth to as close to their original state as possible.

Treatment performed:

2 resin restorations (green photo), 3 resin restorations (black photo)

Highlight for the patient:

This patient appreciated the early detection aspect very much. Catching problems early means simpler treatments with less cost and less risk of more complex eventualities such as root canal treatment.

Highlight for us:

Using the latest x-ray and transillumination technologies, we were able to be pick these problem areas up early in the disease process. This means that we’re able to preserve as much of the natural good tooth structure as possible. We also take great pride in shaping and matching our restorations to be harmonious with the surrounding structure 🙂

Resin Quick Facts

Dental resin is an advanced plastic material engineered to bond very well to tooth structure and ‘fill’ up minor defects. It’s not as strong as natural tooth structure and as a plastic will scratch, discolour and degrade over time (much like a plastic Tupperware container). Used in appropriate settings, resin restorations have a lifespan of 5-12 years.

Advantages

+ cheaper than ceramic alternatives

+ most conservative (resin can be moulded to whatever shape we want meaning we get drill less and save more of your tooth structure)

+ for minor aesthetic improvements, we can often make big improvements with minimum intervention

Limitations

– very technique sensitive – bonding and placement protocols MUST be followed strictly otherwise quality of the restoration is drastically reduced

isn’t as strong as tooth structure so doesn’t wear well under situations where high strength/support is needed

surface roughens easily leading to more plaque build up and thus higher risk of re-decay
